For Japan

I like most have watched events unfold in Japan over the last month, with much heartache. Some folks here at Pixar, lead by the talented and generous Dice Tsutsumi, have set up a fund that makes donating easy and direct. The money will flow directly to Japan though an established charity, Give to Asia. The fund is called Artists Help Japan. I have also done a painting (above) that will be auctioned off for the fund in a private auction.

It has been a while, but I went out plein air painting with Grant Alexander yesterday. It was wet and blustery so we painted from inside the back of the car with the back door halfway up. Flat soft light is hard to paint.

CTN Expo

I'll be at the CTN Expo this year. I was asked to be part of a panel on Art Direction with several super talented folks. Andy Gaskil is the moderator and the panelist are myself, Alberto Mielgo, Bill Perkins and Christophe Vacher. The panel is called They've Got the Look! Art Directors Discuss What it Takes. The panel takes place Saturday at 3:00.

I'll also be selling a sketch book at the Expo (a first for me). It's 74 full color pages of pastel illustrations, plein air paintings and sketches. If you are not going to CTN I will also be selling the book on my blog after the event. It is going to cost a little extra from my blog as it will be print to order. I'm going to be sharing a booth with the awesome John Nevarez, not sure on the booth number yet. If you can't find me there I may be over at the Pixar booth looking at portfolios.

I hope to see you down there, I think it is going to be a good time.

I got a little time to do some plein air for my birthday (thanks to my lovely wife). On top of that I was joined by my oldest daughter. My paintings didn't come out that well, but it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable plein air sessions of my life. I have included the painting my daughter did with me. She calls it "Mouth."

Another charity auction painting

This was done for BROWNSTONES TO RED DIRT charity auction. All the work for the auction is being done on wooden postcards and working in pastel turned out to be a huge hassle, so I had to get out the old acrylics. It was fun working in a different medium, but a tough challenge as well.

I really intended to post more, but life intervened. You may or my not have notice I got promoted at work, witch turns out to be tones more work. I'm also working on several books, but cannot show my drawings. However, on my wife birthday we got someone to watch our lovely daughter and went out painting for the first time in quite a while. This one is from Mark Twain's Jumping Frog Of Calaveras County. Calaveras County is about a two hour drive from where I grew up. As a kid we I went to Mark Twain's cabin near Angel's Camp on a school field trip. Every year Calaveras County still has frog jumping competitions along with their county fair.

Sadly I do not have a lot of time to do personal work that I can show on this blog the way I used to. I'm working on some children's books, but for legal reasons I cannot show any of it. Likewise, I cannot show any of my production work from Pixar (except stuff already published). I decided to start reading a bunch of short stories and will try and get an illustration done form the one I like best in a week of lunches, flat. That means I have a total of 5 hours to read the story develop the characters and environment as well as paint the final piece. There is no way I can do this every week it will just burn me out, but here is my first attempt.

This illustration is form Edgar Allen Poe's the Cask of Amontillado. Just a great story all round.

I don't normally talk about my work on this blog, but this time I will make an exception.
I have not been posting as much as I would like do mostly to work. Finally the fruits of that labor have arrive in theaters and I can tell you about it. I worked for a while on Up, but the bulk of my work for the last year has come from Production Designing Pixar's newest short Partly Cloudy. It was a huge challenge, but a wonderful experience I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Finally a new post

It has been a while. Life has pushed me into the fast lane on bicycle. It's all good, but I have little time for my own work these days. This is a commission I somehow found time to do for Steven Gettis and his wonderful art collection (see link below). The them is literary character/author/figure, I chose Beatrix Potter and her most famous creation Peter Rabbit. Her work was a hug influence on me as a child and I have never forgotten.

A couple month ago, I posted a link to the blog of a few painter who get together in the mornings to paint, well now we have a show coming up in San Francisco. It's a great opportunity to pick up some amazing art and meet some inspirational artists if you make it to the opening.

This is a show of 11 artists who all have day jobs (mostly at Pixar) but wake up early to do a quick morning painting session before they go to work. It’s a small gallery but you can see some nice pieces by dedicated artists. The group includes my long time heros like Bill Cone and Sharon Calahan, and all the incredible colleagues such as Enrico Casarosa, Robert Kondo, Jennifer Chan, Ernesto Nemesio, Dice Tsutsumi, Nick Sung, and a few outside illustrator friends Mike Dutton and Jimmy G.

Here is my pastel process post. As I started putting this together, I realized there was not that much to tell ,but here it is.

My set up consists of a giant umbrella, an umbrella stand that I made out of and old light stand, a small seat ( just like the one my talented wife is sitting in while she paints), my box of pastels and Canson pastel paper sandwiched between a piece of pexyglass and a piece of masonite with alligator clips ( so I don't smudge completed pieces).

Here is a close up.

I usually start by figuring out weather the view is better for a vertical or horizontal composition. After that, most of the time I do a few really quick thumbnails.

For the next step I do a quick layout in line (using a pastel to keep it rough).

Then I just start laying in color. I don't mix with my finger although a lot of people do. I'm more interested in how two colors put right next to each other combine in the views eye, then I am in mixing the colors for them. Most of the time I start with the sky, it tends to be the lightest part of the picture as a whole and starting with it helps me develop my value scale.

After the sky I generaly work out the rest of the lights and darks.

After I feel I have the whole value structure working, the best part of the painting begins for me. From here on out, I just push color around playing with warms and cools and trying to capture the feeling I get form the light and the environment.

The whole process form setup through clean-up rarely takes more than an hour. One of the reasons I use pastels is that the setup and break-down is so easy.

I hope this helps people. The most important this is to try and enjoy it even when it's not working out. On almost every piece, I feel like it's not going to work out at least three time.

Most of my character work has been in line, so it's a great challenge to design using light, shadow and color, but it's a lot of fun at the same time. I happend to be along the coast this weekend, so I did some combination plein air development work on my book. The california coast is not Ireland at all, but It had a good coast feel. The first two pieces are plein air, with characters and buildings added from my story.

The last two were painted up in the woods of the coast near Pescadero California.

As I said in my previous post, I'm trying to push the way I use shape and form in my work. So here are some plein air pastels where I attempted to let go of what I was seeing and tried to paint what the place felt like. At the same time I was trying to find ways to simplify and push the forms. This was much more difficult then I expected, it was also more fun then I expected. I had to fight my own artistic habits every step of the way.

Every time I stop by the blogs of Neil Campbell Ross and Alberto Mielgo (see links at right) I'm inspired by the simplicity strength and seeming effortlessness with which they create their work. It has been far to long since I last posted, for that I apologies. Last week however I was on vacation and did tons of new pastels at Salmon Lake in the Sierras. Here is a small sampling I hope you enjoy.

Backpacking pastels

Over the Forth of July weekend I went backpacking with my wife and some friends and did these pastels. I wanted to capture how the light changed at different times of day. The top one is in evening the middle mid-day and the bottom morning.

I really wanted to post non pastels, but that will have to wait for another post.
The ocean painting is from LA and the other two were done an a very overcast day with very flat light.
I also included an image of my box for arri.

I did these pastels a few weeks ago and decided to post them. I want to show the fun work I have been doing on my book, but I'm just trying to get it done right now, I will show a bunch of that work sometime soon.

It's been a while, but I'm trying to get back to character design. Here is another character design challenge, this one is disgruntled teenage girl bagger. For some reason I can't get the color right on the colored one, it's become a nagative.

I feel bad that I have not posted for a few weeks, but I have been crazy busy. Here are some new pastels and I will be starting up the character design challenge again soon and will try and be more consistent with posting them.

Inspired by James Robertson's recent trip to Italy (see link at right) as well as Colin and Annie Fix's up coming trip to Italy (also see links to right), I decided to post some of the pastels I did while I was there with my wife last year. I really want to go back it is so beautiful.

I had just enough time to do three new pastels last weekend. Unfortunately the sun went down on my last one and I had to cut it short do to wind and rain (bottom image). I had fun anyway, it's nice to be outside creating art and the changing weather made for very different colors. The top and bottom pastels were created one right after the other.
