The word of this month was "Alien." I had fun doing this one, but ended up liking my drawing more than the final.
Tell me what you think.
Enjoy

I think they're both great, just in different ways.
Really nice job!
this is such a beautiful piece
I love them both! Great idea and execution!
I love so much the cold mood on this one! And that "mafia" look on characters. It seems like a really secret project is going on there...
Nice work!
I like them both, as Logan said. But, you definitely gain so much more in mood with the painting. What I like about your stuff is that you have a way of simplifying the subject/shapes without loosing the form or character!
I think is great the way you search the extreme shapes of things and add the impressionistic colorstyling and whatever you do is different from anybody else. That's why you are in Pixar, you are an inspiration.:o)Thanks
HOLY CRAPP!!!! man! it was never a mistake following you!..gotta move ya to my faves..geez! keep it up!
uh if it's not a bother can you show us your color preliminaries?..i mean do you do a bunch of color sketches first before nailing the final art?..as much as i would love to see the final stuff..i'd also love to see your first color applications on the sketch..you're an inspiration!
i wish i could buy your sketchbook!
Thank you all for you thoughts. Dalibor and Anna, I'm glad you notice my struggle with simplifying shapes and retaining character and mood at the same time. Lloyd, most of the time I do color comps, although I did not this time I used ref instead. I'll try and post more of my process in the future.
thanks for the reply noah..i combed through your blog and loved the Rip Van Winkle piece..i love how you do your bgs in my opinion it's more on the impressionistic side..which i love and prefer..i love your style and Jeff Pidgeon's though Bill Cone's awesome too..but i prefer "caricatured" or the "impressionistic" approach..which what i've observed in your stuff even in your outdoor gigs..i've tried pastel when i was in college but didn't liked it..it was messy for me..but seeing a lot several artists who used the medium in different styles (You, Bill Cone, Jeff Pidgeon, Mary Grandpre', and Brett Helquist to name a few) i think i'll give it another go.
so awesome, love the organic qualities of the tentacles playing off the rigidity of the suits and buildings. great colors, and love seeing the process sketch
This is awesome!!
I love seeing your sketches and how you take them to a finish. The sketches really do have a life and quality of their own. Thank you for posting your process work!
I had fun responsibility this one, but ended up liking my diagram more than the final,
