These are great. So much atmosphere.
awesome plein air pastels! The bottom two are definitely different from your normal pastels. Thanks for sharing.
these are great -
very pretty pictures
nice! i like how you both captured the very essence of the coast, and added a little something more (nice and green, in contrast to here in the valley). very well done.
You've been very busy. Awesome work as usual. I particularly love the interface of the greenery and the rocks in the topmost one and the haze in the second one.
I'm blown away by your work!
Love the blog. Great work. Keep it up. I recognize parts of the coast. Is that Bean Hollow? Very cool. Great memories around Pescadero. Did you get some artichoke soup between drawings? :)
Great work.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment everyone.
Shawn- The paintings were done at Pomponio State Beach, one ridge over form Bean Hollow. Sadly no soup it's not in season right now. I love Eddi the Yeti.
Noah,
I love all the images you've done for this story you're working on, it looks beautiful. When it comes out put me down for a few copies.
Great stuff man!
Hey Noah, I think that you did a good job of making the california coast feel very irish. I was thinking that if your little character had a saturated red coat on it would contrast nicely with all that green. It might add a nice bit of intrest and warmth. Just a thought.
Hi Noah,
I was taught some time ago in art school that smearing the chalk on the paper while attempting to render a form was tabu! And to make a mark with line to describe form is always a better route. Having said all that, do you ever smear your pastels to create a tonal wash before you dive in with line?
Thanks!

best ones yet!
Looks really great! How do you start one of these? Do you start with a sketch or go right to pastels?
WOW!! THese are stunning, love the atmospheric feel and movement of your stroke, it caputures the wind along the coast!!
Thanks everyone for the comments.
scott- Great idea to change the sweater into the complimentary color of the background, I'll give it a try.
r. dress- I don't think it is taboo to use any technique with any medium. If we all did exactly what everyone else did we would still be painting on cave walls.
That said, I do not use my finger to smear the pastels, I love the impressionistic idea of letting the color mix in the viewer eye not on the canvas (I do however, know many talented pastel artists who do mix with their fingers).
dave-I'll try and post a process post later this week or early next week. A picture is worth a thousand words after all. To answer your question, I do a sketch first using pastel ( but I try and keep it really rough just focusing on large shapes and composition).
Thanks again for your interest and comments.
Noah,
I gave you a "Thinking Blogger Award". http://www.thethinkingblog.com/2007/02/thinking-blogger-awards_11.html
