Bodega Bay pastels

I took a trip with my wife to Bodega Bay this weekend ( yes, where "The Birds" was filmed). I was incredibly windy, but I got these two pastels done anyway.

That's Bodega Bay alright. Perfectly captured. I love the light hitting the rocks...

More Awesome pastels - I gotta agree with Joshua - especially in the second one, the lighting is just great :)

Super! I love the way you've captured the expanse of sky in the top picture. The lighting and build up of colour in both is fantastic!

hey man, These are gorgeous dude, wow, nice job. I just picked up a set of prismacolor soft pastels, they were on a great sale, and I think they will do the job. Is there any particular paper you use, and what is a good size to work in?

Thanks folks, I really enjoy doing outdoor pastels, it's very freeing. I don't really care how they come out and I'm not doing it for a job or a book, it's just plain art for enjoyment.

Jeremy, I just use a mid-tone warm canson paper. I use the soother side, I hate spending time filling in the little divots on the rough side. I cant wait to see your pastels.

how big do you do these pastels in? they're great!

Noah Klocek said...

Hey Paul-The pastels are not that large the lsat two are about 8 inches tall by 3.5 inches across.

Stahis- I don't know how most people start a book, but I started with lost of ideas ( I try and keep track of all the ideas I come up with. Some aren't worth developing some are). After that I start sketching and writing. The sketching and writing on my book has taken around 2 years (although I have been working full time in the industry the whole time). I now have an editor going over my book and I'm polishing up a dummy of the book to try and sell it to a publisher. I don't even know if someone will publish my book, but I'm sure enjoying making it.

P.S. is there decent surfing in the Mediterranean?
I love surfing, but most of the stuff I saw in Italy was small beach break.

Hi Noah! Thanx for the input.
Let me explain about my predicament.
Parallel to my product design (check out our website:www.vastdesign.gr), my interests also lie in drawing and painting and at the same time, since college, I have an extremely soft spot for imaginative worlds, alternate reallities, stories e.t.c.

However, since there is no entertainment industry here in Greece, that I can
work for, I do not know how to proceed.
I have had thoughts of developing stories, illustrating them and then
getting my art in galleries. Another thought was to publish my illustrated
stories (not in comic book form) in books, layed out and designed by myself.
What other outlets are there?

I have seen your work as well as Christian Schellewald's and Luc
Desmarchelier's work as well as the work in the book 'In the future...'
which shows Art Center entertainment design work, and I can honestly say
that that kind of 'visual development' art is what interests me the most.

Any thoughts?
P.S. Surfing in the Med is tricky.
There are good days, there are bad days and in between, there are glorious days! However, because the driving power behind waves here is the wind, one needs to be on top of the weather forecasts all day because one might miss the window very easily. Anyway, we try to stay stoked year round over here and we also travel.
P.S.2 I will be posting work on my blog at: stathisblog-stathis-stathis.blogspot.com

Both are beautiful, but the top one . . . all that sky . . . breathtaking! :)

It was crazy running into you on the BART! These are beautiful, as always... do you squint when you're looking at what you're painting, or have you just figured out what details to leave out, and how to imply the shapes...?

I so want to live there. Bit scared of birds though.

Some of the best use of light I've seen in pastels for ages. I usually end up getting more on me than the paper (which is why I use my mac more often these days).

Is it ok to link to your site from my one? Your work is excellent.
