New Pastels

I have been using new, much softer, pastels for the last few weeks thanks to Bill Cone. It's a struggle, but I'm having fun and learning a lot. Here are a few of plein air pieces with the new pastels.

i love the valley pastel with the billowing clouds...the blue is fantastic and the overall effect of the soft pastels is very appealing.

It's so hard to work with pastels. You make it feel so simple... Looks like i'm there. Cool.

Noah- I'm really glad to find your blog dude! I bought some pastels over the summer, but they were kindof cheapies, I used to have really good ones, but i used them up. So with that I'm in the market for some new BETTER ones, what kind are you using? Beautiful artwork!

Thanks for all the kind comment, although I'm far from a pastel master I'm glad all of you like my work. Everyone seems very frighten of pastels, but if you stick with it for just a little bit you'll find it's not as hard as you think.

Jeremy-I in the past to used Nupastels (considered by many as cheapies), but I love them. For the last couple of week I have been working with new, expensive, hand made, soft chalk (not oil) pastels and although they are silky and fun I do miss the NuPastles. If I were you I would go to the art store and just try a bunch of different ones and see what you like the best.

Your landscapes are so gorgeous... do you do any color design for your job, or is it just sketches? I think your colors are really powerful.

Do you work on white paper, or black, or any particular color?

Noah Klocek said...

thanks for the really kind comments form everyone.

emma-I don't do that much color work at my current job, I do mostly concept drawings. I used to matte paint for dreamworks and burned out a bit on photoshop painting, although I do still paint sometimes when it is needed. As far as paper is concerned I use a mid-toned canson paper I like warm gray, but others like to start with cool mid-toned paper.

Terrific work as usual. Have you thought of showing your pastels in a gallery? I think they'd do very well.
