A few more vacation pastels

Here's another few of the pastels I did on my vacation.

Great stuff. Your mastery over the medium is quite amazing.

Noah, I was wondering how quick you usually were to kill one of these pastelles? Because I don't know the medium much, and I know from my little experience that outdoor sketching can't long forever. These pieces are inspirational, makes me want to try by myself ( and to head for the mountains, too :)

Yeah, these sure are beautiful.

I didn't know pastelles can capture such a beautiful and realistic colour and atmosphere... your art are amazing.

Thanks everyone. Laurent, I usually spend anywhere form 15 minutes to an hour on a piece, I find if I work longer I muddy up the piece with to much detail. I would say on average I spend about 25 minutes per pastel.

Very nice pieces again. My favorite are the last two. The light is so well observed.

Thanks for your answer Noah. I'm still looking for a medium ( that fits me ) to color sketch outdoor, and before looking at your images, I never though of trying pastelles to do so - that's why i was asking. I have found that one can't really spend more than 30 mn on a piece, on average, because one gets cold, weather changes, etc... Anyway, keep on doing these!

Noah, I was curious what kind of paper you prefer when doing outdoor pastel studies. Do you fix them in the field?

Where'd ya go on your vacation? Looks like Switzerland... That water surface on the post below is spectacular. But you know that already. Cheers!

I really, really like how you do the water in your pastels. The last picture is especially good (imo), just the intensity and glow of the grass, and how there's more sky in the water than in the sky itself...

Hi Noah,

These pastels are really good, I particularly like the one with the house from this group and the second down in the next (the trees in half shadow) you really capture the light well. Your work is really inspiring, personally I've never been much good with pastels, but after seeing this I really want to try again. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

I really mean to post more I just been very busy trying to finish up my children's book. I'm glad more people are getting excited about pastels, I really think they are a perfect blend between drawing an painting. James man of Stone: I just use Canson, warm mid-tone drawing paper, nothing fancy. The Doodlers: I wish it was Switzerland, I have never been. It is instead a place called Salmon Lake, it's in California, north of Lake Tahoe by about an hour.

I promise to post soon and if I can get up the nerve, maybe even some stuff from my children's book development.
