Character design

Last weeks character design challenge was a B-movie Monster. I found this one very difficult. I had a lot of trouble figuring out the differences between a normal monster and a B-movie monster. To be honest I'm not real happy with any of them, but here are some of my sketches anyway. I would love any critiques.

I think you did a pretty good job. I like the shapes and variety you got here!!

Hey Benjamin,
I'm trying with the shapes thanks for the encouragement. It is strange to me how color comes so easy and yet I struggle so hard with character.

HAHA you know I have to agree with you about The Colour and Character thing. BUt to be Honest Those are 2 seperate things. Everyones good at something Naturally. FOr me personally My natural strengths like you is Colour and Compositions. YOu know i always wanted to be a character designer until i actually found out i loved doing colour work much more. GO figure. BUt i still doo enjoy drawing characters ALOT but i just dont think doing character designs will ever bring bread and butter to the table in my case. BUt thats just me!!!

BUt you know in the end It all depends how other people view your work. To someone else these characters are a MASTERPEICE!!! =p.
Keep at it.

Love the characters! You might want to consider the cheesyness of the B-movie genre. That might add some uniqueness to your designs. The ones you have right now are very well realized and can live in their own universe but B-movie characters were limited by budget and well, imagination. There were some that had gorilla suits with a bubble helmet for example. Now that is cheesy!!

Great blog! And I really like your designs and your versatility. Say hi to Ricky for me!

Hey Noah, I think they're great drawings. It sounds like you're playing them too straight for what you want. They're great nonetheless. Really great in fact.
